PURPOSE

To provide minimum standards and best practices for those holding management positions and oversight for Dementia Units. Oversight includes at a minimum, coordination, implementation, and development of existing and new Dementia Units, best practices, and policies.

QUALIFICATIONS

The manager/supervisor of the dementia unit must be 21 years of age and possess:

  • 21 years of age
  • Completion of the NCCDP CADDCT course. This is a comprehensive Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia care education program which includes a minimum of 8 hours consisting of: Overview of dementia, Diagnosis, Prognosis, Treatment, Communication, Feelings, Depression, Repetitive Behaviors, Sun Downing, Paranoia, Hallucinations, Wandering, Hoarding, Aggressive Behaviors, Catastrophic Reactions, Intimacy, Sexuality, Pain Management, Bathing, Dressing, Toileting, Nutrition, Activities, Environment, Staff Support, Family Support, Diversity, and Cultural Competence, Spiritual Care and End of Life Issues. Evidence of completion is a certificate from NCCDP approved trainer.
  • A Bachelors's degree in a related health care field. Or LPN, RN, or LVN
  • One year of experience overseeing a dementia unit.
  • 3 years experience in a health care setting assisted living or nursing home.
  • Certified or licensed in a health care profession.
  • Meet all state and federal regulations regarding dementia unit managers where applicable.
  • Meet the requirements of the CADDCT application.
  • Meet the requirements of the CDP® application.

CERTIFIED DEMENTIA CARE MANAGER COURSE

Upon completion of this course, the student will be certified as a Certified Dementia Care Manager®.

CDCM® Course includes:

1st Day: CADDCT:  See CADDCT registration forms https://portal.nccdp.org/becomeapprovedinstructor.htm Seminar for CADDCT is from 7:30 A.M. to 8:00 P.M.  and includes PowerPoint disk for the NCCDP Alzheimer’s and dementia curriculum, overhead notes, master hand out notebook, DVD, Text Books, Pre Test / Post Test for your staff,  sample brochure, sample certificate, sample sign-in sheet, Certification as a CDP® and Certification as an Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care Trainer. This is a live class. Lunch and dinner provided.

2nd Part: This portion will take place via conference call and is 3 hours. The student will be provided an NCCDP Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Unit Policy and Procedure Manual.  Upon completion, the student will be awarded the certification as CDCM® Certified Dementia Care Manager®.
